Joseph and Cecilia Sherwin are appealing the dismissal of their false imprisonment suit—filed after officials at Maquoketa Caves State Park forced them to sit at a picnic table without food, medication, or access to their vehicle while searching for their son, Anthony Sherwin, who killed a Cedar Falls family in 2022, and they plan to take the appeal to the Iowa Supreme Court.

Cedar Falls City Council approved a separation agreement with Ron Gaines, though councilmembers Aaron Hawbaker and Kelly Dunn said they did not support the process—citing concerns over how the decision was reached and its potential impact on future city operations.

The agreement provides Gaines with severance pay matching his annual salary, continued health benefits, and payment for accrued time off.
