Crews were called to Black Hawk Park around 7:30 p.m. Sunday when a strong current pushed a group of kayakers into debris on the Cedar River in Cedar Falls (nobody was injured) as water rescue teams launched boats to bring them to safety.
Datarius Spates Jr. (an escapee from Waterloo Residential Correctional Facility) was charged with fatally shooting his brother and injuring a woman a block away after he reportedly fired from his brother’s house; he faces charges for willful injury causing serious injury, use of a weapon during a crime, felon in possession of a firearm, intimidation with a weapon, and felony escape with a bond of $75,000.
Cedar Falls officials have released maps showing road closures and parking changes—steps to manage traffic as thousands of cyclists will visit downtown for RAGBRAI on Thursday.
The plans will assist residents and visitors in navigating the event safely.
Due to construction at Memorial Stadium, the first four Waterloo West and East football games will be played in the UNI-Dome between August 29th and September 19th — the change is planned to keep the season on track while repairs continue.
The teams will adjust their schedules as the work progresses.
The Iowa Girls High School Coaches Association released its All District Softball Teams and showed strong representation from the KWAY area—Cedar Falls players Amanda Finck and Lexi Trueg in Class 5A were honored along with athletes from Waterloo West, Waverly Shell Rock, Sumner Fredericksburg Tripoli, Denver, Columbus, Clarksville, Don Bosco, Janesville and Wapsie Valley. The announcement highlights local talent across five classes.
The State Softball Tournament began Monday in Fort Dodge — 6-seed Cedar Falls played 3-seed Southeast Polk at 5:15 — and Clarksville and Wapsie Valley start action today on the KWAY Sports Network.
The Mississippi Valley Conference announced the All-Conference baseball teams and five Cedar Falls Tigers were honored.
Two Tigers earned First Team honors and three received Second Team honors (catcher Trever Kelling, infielder Maddux Strassburg, pitcher Dash Shortway, infielder Cade Steffens, and outfielder Jackson Hartzell).
