Black Hawk County Jail released statistics showing a drop from 6,700 bookings and an average daily population of 250 in 2023 to just over 6,000 bookings and 227 daily occupants last year—even as deputies responded to 88 serious crimes, up from 74 in 2023.

Fayette County magistrate David Hanson was removed by the Iowa Supreme Court for using racist slurs and making inappropriate comments in his rulings and in court—remarks that prompted formal complaints over his language in cases involving a Hispanic defendant and a 17-year-old girl's arrest warrant.
